Session 41 - Iwee Bribes a Rat
25th Feb 2022 - 19:45 - 11:00
In-game timeline: Start of session: 1489DR Uktar 09. End of session: 1489DR Uktar 15
Our "Heroes" are recovering in Neverwinter after a busy time on Abbey Isle. They have enough experience and, somehow, money to all level up and spend their time learning their new skills and buying new equipment (and healing potions!).
Derrick summons a new familiar. An owl that he christens "Owl Pacino". The DM, and the rest of the world, groans.
Iwee and Derrick decide to visit a rally held by the Lord Protector candidate, Dagult Neverember. Derrick's family has history with this person, and Iwee had been having strange memories triggered when she saw pictures of his face on posters around the city. They both went in disguise and kept to the back of the crowd, but when Iwee saw his face in real life for the first time she had flashbacks of memories long-withheld - bad memories, violent memories. She could not quite place the memories in her life, but is sure they are from the point shortly before she lost all recollection. Perhaps this Neverember would have information on what happened to her?
Derrick receives a note from Devon in the Little Fingers, and meets up with him in a quiet tavern. Iwee decides to bribe a rat with some gruyere cheese, to follow Derrick and "keep an eye on him". Devon tells Derrick that the lockbox they recovered had some useful information regarding a certain Dagult Neverember. He speaks of a relative of Neverember that could prove to be an embarrassment to the family name. The Little Fingers are keen to allow Dagult to become Lord Protector of Neverwinter, and then to make their move on him. Devon "requests" that the group do not make any moves on Dagult before they are ready, and maybe they should leave Neverwinter for a while, at least until after Dagult has been elected, in case Neverember is tipped off to there being "enemies" of him within the city. The Little Fingers will be in touch. The rat gets his reward.
Meanwhile Karoshi is finding out more about the artifact that he, and his deceased mentor, Kalten, has been searching for. By comparing and reviewing the information contained in Kalten's notebook, and the ancient tome that he found on Abbey Isle, he learns that the Angel's Fury was perhaps a key to the prison of an ancient and very dangerous Demon Lord, named Fraz Urb'luu, and that the gem known as the Eye of Kronos was part of this device, previously hidden on Abbey Isle but now in possession of the Radiant Sisters themselves.
The tiefling also learns that the raid on his home temple, as he foresaw in a dream previously, was true, and that many of his brethren had been killed. Tales of a "one-winged demon" ravaging the temple, leaving few survivors and searching for Kalten prove to be somewhat concerning. When Karoshi is later set upon by thugs on his way back to meet his friends after a day in the libraries, he becomes even more concerned. The thugs seemed intent on stealing his backpack, but Karoshi just about manages to escape into the crowd before they are able to grab it.
Relating what he had discovered, and what had happened to him, to the others that evening, Iwee had a flashback at the mention of a one-winged demon. Images entered her mind of a pendant containing a single, red wing, possibly that of a demon. The memories seemed to be related to those she got when she saw Dagult Neverember's face for the first time…
A note is left for our "Heroes" from the previous captain/pirate/cap'n, Cranfall/Bryn/Grayson Hatchet. It mentions that Shadow Isle has just been attacked by something and there was a massacre, and apparently the isle is now drifting. The group try to catch up with Cap'n Hatchet but his ship has just sailed and won't be back for another couple of weeks. They ask the Harbourmaster about this, but he is reluctant to pass on any information about Shadow Isle, even if he does know anything about it.
The party decide to heed the Little Fingers warning, and get out of the city for a while. They head to the town of Whitewater, where Iwee is hoping to find Father Greatshaw, who, according to the note left for her by the gnome Klik, may have information regarding her parents' potential destination, the town of Moonfall. Karoshi leaves the ancient Tome with the clerics in the Temple of Moradin, for safe keeping.
When they arrive in the puritanical town of Whitewater, they seem to happen upon a trial of sorts. Three women are accused of being witches. The town is certain that at least one of the women is a witch and has been corrupting, and casting spells upon the children of the town. The mayor has placed the burden of deciding which, if any, of the women are guilty upon the bent and old shoulders of Father Greatshaw, and he is not particularly happy with the responsibility. When the Mayor, Bagshott Crawford, sees this band of outsiders, he immediately asks them to help out the town by being an independent judge and jury against the accused. Father Greatshaw, looking a little relieved, promises to provide information on Moonfall if the party make the decision for him.
Reluctantly, the party agree. They ask for some time to investigate the situation and the Mayor agrees to reconvene the town at nightfall for a decision to be made, and the sentence to be passed out.
Our "Heroes" have 6 hours to decide the fate of the three women…
