Iarno's Letters
18th day of spring
Iarno,
Our search for the Forge of Spells continues,
and we make great progress.
Others may come to Phandalin hunting for Wave
Echo Cave – we need to stop them. You and your Redbrands should waylay them,
delay them, and, if needed, kill them before they get too close.
Any notes, maps or similar that you find on
such adventurers should be sent on to me via our usual communication methods,
as they may have information that can help in our search.
Be aware that Grol at Cragmaw Castle has also
been tasked with waylaying such adventurers, so feel free to work with his band
if it helps.
Our contact in town will notify you if any
such adventurers arrive. Ensure that your Redbrands deal with them
appropriately.
23rd day of spring
Iarno,
I need you to send a band of your Redbrands
to Old Owl Well, and obtain an item for me that will help in our progress
towards the Forge of Spells.
I have discovered that the Humans’ key was
taken there after the mine was closed. I’m not sure what form this key will
take, but I suspect it is some kind of artefact, obviously old, though may not
be obvious what it is for.
Send your Redbrands, have them search for it,
and report back to me.
Tread carefully – I do not know if the
ancient ruin is occupied.
31st day of spring
Iarno,
I received your report regarding the sortie
to Old Owl Well. I understand that they were too late.
I also understand that rather than track down
the thief and retrieve the item, your cowardly group just came straight back to
Phandalin. This is unacceptable.
I’ll have to pay that human fool Hamuna a
visit at Old Owl Well myself and try to get more information about the seal – I
have methods of obtaining information I need from people, especially a petty Red
Wizard of Thay.
Send your ruffians to Thundertree forthwith,
and retrieve the item as priority. I will not accept another failure.
4th day of midsummer
Iarno,
This must be getting embarrassing for you.
Of
course your band of petty cutpurses and thugs would not be able to defeat a
dragon, even a young one, in combat, you fool! It is no surprise that they were
wiped out. At least that leaves fewer imbeciles in your employ.
I tire of waiting.
You send
another group to Thundertree, and this time send some with a modicum of
intelligence. Bargain, negotiate, beg or steal, just make sure they come back
with the artefact.
If
they fail again, I will send you next time. And YOU will be the offering I will
bargain with.
